We’re well on our way into the fall season… can you feel it where you are? As the temperatures drop, we’re all a little antsy to get our houses spruced up and feeling cozy for fall and the upcoming winter months.
One of the best, easiest and most affordable ways to update your home at the change of a season is with throw pillows! We always say… “keep your main pieces classic and neutral and have fun with the accessories!” Seriously… that’s our @einteriors.design motto.
Today we’re giving you 3 easy and fool proof tips to curating the perfect throw pillow collection on your sofa. Are you ready?
How to Choose Throw Pillows for your Sofa: 3 Top Tips

TIP #1: CHOOSING THROW PILLOW COLORS
While it’s not necessary to choose a specific color palette – think of the overall theme! Think about the general feeling you are trying to achieve. Is is neutral and subdue? Is it cool and coastal or warm and saturated? There is no right answer, just try to create pairings and colors that will work with your existing decor. Don’t forget what furniture piece the throw pillows will be sitting on either…that plays a part in your color palette as well.

TIP #2: CHOOSING THROW PILLOW PATTERNS
There are endless ways to mix and match your pillows, however, we have a few suggestions 🙂 Start with a solid(ish) throw pillow. Remember: texture is a huge bonus!
Add in a pillow with a small scale pattern pillow (a dot or small flower would be an example of a small scale). Have this accent pattern be a similar color to your solid pillow.
To top off your throw pillow combo, add in a third option with a large scale pattern (think about a stripe that’s not too busy) or minimally patterned pillow with colors that compliment your other two pillows.

TIP #3: CHOOSING THROW PILLOW SIZES
We as designers like to use large items to fill a space – less is more…in our opinion! So, the same applies for throw pillows on a sofa or bed. Here is our basic rule of thumb…
To achieve the perfect scale when styling a bed, try using throw pillows that are 24″-26″ on a King, 24″ on a Queen and a single 22″ or 24″ on a Twin.
On a typical sofa, 20″-22″ pillows are the right size to make a visual impact. If you have an extra large sofa or sectional, don’t be scared to go up to 24″ pillows.
One last tip – mix in smaller lumbars for height variation and visual interest! Stick the lumbar in front of the other two throw pillows. Mixing the sizes is a great way to add interest and that “wow, that looks so designer!” look 😉
